A World Cup of Smell

A football team is a flag, a song, a way of playing — and, if you stand close enough, a smell. Not the players; the place. Every nation at this tournament sits on its own patch of earth, with its own weather, its own kitchen, its own raw materials — and a handful of them are, quite literally, where the world's perfume comes from. So we did the only thing a perfume house could do with a World Cup of forty-eight countries: we gave each one a scent. Below is the entire field, a squad you can build, and a quiz to find the nation you'd wear.

The perfumer's nations

A few of these countries don't just have a smell — they supply it. France grows the jasmine and rose of Grasse, the cradle of modern perfume. Tunisia and Morocco are the orange-blossom and rose capitals of the world. Haiti grows most of the planet's vetiver. Mexico gave the world real vanilla; Egypt, jasmine grandiflorum and lotus; Saudi Arabia, the rose-oud of Taif. When these teams walk out, a perfumer sees more than a side — they see a field they've ordered from. Football's map and fragrance's map were always, quietly, the same map.
