Description

There are certain nights that remain unusually vivid in my memory, not necessarily because of what happened, but because of how everything looked and felt at that particular moment. The night of 19 February 2023 is one of them. I remember it as a complete atmosphere, almost like a photograph that somehow retained its temperature, its colours, and the feeling of standing in a particular place at a particular hour. It was not a collection of different memories or an imagined interpretation of several evenings. It was one night, one particular moment in my life, and I wanted to preserve it as closely as I could through fragrance.

What fascinated me about that night was how naturally everything seemed to belong together. The colour of the sky, the appearance of the buildings beneath it, the artificial lights, the temperature of the surrounding air, and the peculiar stillness that occasionally settles over a city after dark. I remember being particularly aware of my surroundings, although I cannot entirely explain why. The buildings were ordinary structures, yet under that particular sky and lighting, they seemed to possess a different character. Their surfaces, their silhouettes, and the way they stood against the darkness became part of the memory. Even the air felt significant. Its temperature, the sensation of it against my skin, and the subtle contrast between the atmosphere outside and the warmth of the spaces around me seemed to contribute to something I knew I wanted to remember.

When I first conceived this fragrance, I was not interested in translating the night into a conventional interpretation of darkness. I did not want excessive smoke, heavy woods, or an overwhelming oriental composition simply because the inspiration took place after sunset. The night I remembered had a different personality. There was elegance in its appearance, a certain softness in its atmosphere, and something deeply comforting about being there. It was neither particularly dramatic nor melancholic. What made it memorable was the combination of its visual surroundings and the feeling they created within me. I wanted the fragrance to capture that exact relationship between a place, a moment, and the person experiencing it.

Jasmine Grandiflorum Lune became my interpretation of the sky that evening. I have always found jasmine particularly beautiful when imagined beneath artificial light and the darkness of night. There is a luminosity to jasmine grandiflorum that feels almost visual, as though its fragrance could represent the pale glow of light against a darker background. Together with jasmine sambac and the delicate transparency of muguet, it creates a floral atmosphere that is rich without becoming excessively dense. I wanted the opening to possess the same sensation I remember from looking upward that night, when the sky appeared to have its own particular colour and depth. Not absolute darkness, but a softer, more complicated shade shaped by the surrounding lights and the atmosphere of the city. The jasmine represents that luminous quality, the impression of something beautiful suspended above an otherwise familiar urban landscape.

Iris Pallida Elegance represents the architecture and visual character of the surroundings. There is something almost architectural about iris to me. It feels composed, structured, and extraordinarily refined, yet its powdery texture gives it a softness that prevents it from appearing cold. On that particular night, the buildings around me seemed unusually beautiful. Their familiar shapes became more interesting beneath the evening sky, and the combination of light and shadow gave them a quiet sophistication. I wanted iris pallida to reproduce that impression. Orris resinoid deepens its powdery character, while carrot seed introduces a subtle earthy quality that makes the composition feel more natural and less abstract. Together, they create an impression of elegance that is not necessarily luxurious in the conventional sense, but rather the beauty of ordinary architecture briefly transformed by a particular moment in time.

The third chord, Vanilla Planifolia Solace, is perhaps the most personal part of the composition because it represents how I felt that night. The warmth of vanilla has always fascinated me, particularly its ability to express comfort without necessarily becoming sweet in an obvious or confectionery manner. I wanted to recreate the peculiar sensation of being completely comfortable within a particular environment, when the temperature feels just right, the surroundings seem familiar, and there is no desire to be anywhere else. Vanilla planifolia and vanilla tahitensis form this foundation, accompanied by benzoin Siam, tonka bean, Peru balsam, and opoponax. Their balsamic richness creates a gentle warmth, while labdanum introduces depth and manuka contributes a darker, subtly honeyed character. The result is a vanilla accord that feels intimate and atmospheric rather than purely gourmand.

Temperature was particularly important to me when developing this fragrance. I wanted the composition to suggest the difference between the cooler impression of the evening air and the warmth I associated with being there. Jasmine and iris provide that cooler, more spacious sensation, while the vanilla gradually introduces warmth beneath them. This contrast is deliberately subtle. I did not want the fragrance to move abruptly from one character to another, because that was not how I remembered the night. Everything existed simultaneously. The sky, the buildings, the temperature, and my own feelings were all part of the same experience. The composition therefore allows its three principal materials to overlap, creating an atmosphere in which floral luminosity, powdery elegance, and balsamic warmth remain closely connected.

Civet, musk, and ambrette seed contribute another dimension that I consider essential to the memory. They introduce a human quality to an otherwise atmospheric composition. I wanted the fragrance to feel as though someone was actually standing within that environment, experiencing the air, observing the surroundings, and carrying the warmth of their own skin into the coolness of the night. The civet is not intended to dominate the composition with overt animalic intensity. Instead, it provides a subtle sensuality beneath the florals and vanilla, while musk and ambrette give the fragrance a softer, more intimate presence. These materials help connect the physical surroundings to the personal experience of being there.

Revisiting this fragrance has been particularly interesting because I am now looking back at a night that took place on 19 February 2023. More than three years have passed, and naturally, many things in my life have changed. Yet the visual memory of that evening remains surprisingly clear. I can still recall the particular impression of the sky, the arrangement of the buildings, the temperature, and the feeling I associated with standing there. I find it fascinating that something so ordinary can remain so distinct while countless other evenings disappear almost entirely from memory. Perhaps it was simply a moment when I happened to notice everything more carefully. Or perhaps there was something about that particular combination of surroundings and emotions that made it impossible to forget.

For this reissue, I wanted to remain faithful to that original impression while allowing myself to express it with greater precision. The composition is still centred on jasmine grandiflorum, iris pallida, and vanilla planifolia, because those three materials remain the most accurate way for me to translate what I remember. Jasmine provides the visual atmosphere of the sky, iris reflects the elegance of the buildings and their surroundings, and vanilla preserves the warmth and emotional comfort of the moment. The supporting materials are there to connect these impressions, adding texture, depth, and a subtle sense of human presence without distracting from the memory itself.

I think what makes this fragrance particularly personal is that its inspiration does not necessarily need to mean anything to anyone else. Someone encountering it for the first time may simply experience an elegant jasmine, a beautiful powdery iris, and a warm, slightly animalic vanilla. They may imagine an entirely different place, another city, or a night from their own life. That is perfectly fine with me. I have never believed that a perfume needs to communicate its inspiration literally to be successful. What matters is that the composition carries the feeling I intended to preserve, even if the person wearing it eventually gives that feeling a completely different meaning.

The night of 19 February 2023 was not an imaginary scene or a romanticised reconstruction of the past. It was a real moment that I experienced, with a particular sky above me, buildings surrounding me, and a temperature and atmosphere that somehow became inseparable from how I felt. I cannot return to that exact evening, and even if I stood in the same place again, the sky, the air, and perhaps even my own perspective would be different. But through this fragrance, I can preserve something of the way I experienced it. Not merely what the night smelled like, but what it looked like, how the air felt against my skin, and how everything around me seemed to belong together for those few hours. That is what I wanted this fragrance to be. A personal olfactory portrait of one night, 19 February 2023, exactly as it continues to exist in my memory.

Longevity & Wear

Every HoM Haute bottle is an extrait de parfum. That tells you the concentration, not how it will behave on you. How long a composition lasts and how far it carries depends on the materials in it, on your skin chemistry, and on the nose that meets it. Some of our bottles sit close and quiet for hours; others announce themselves and then settle. Apply lightly, one or two touches at the pulse points, and let the skin decide.

Our fragrances are sold unmatured. What you receive is a composition at the beginning of its life. Over the first weeks and months the sharper edges settle, the heart becomes rounder, and the base grows deeper and more unified. Keep the bottle closed, away from light and heat, and revisit it over time. The bottle you own at six months is not the bottle you opened.

Philosophy

Every HoM Haute fragrance is produced in small batches. Minor variations between batches may occur due to the use of natural materials, maturation, and ongoing refinement of the composition. Rather than pursuing absolute uniformity, we embrace fragrance as a living creation that continues to evolve. Time, storage conditions, and wear will shape each bottle into a slightly different experience. We encourage you to age and observe your fragrance as part of its journey.
