Wong Kar Wai's debut film is a story where affection often remains unspoken, where every meeting carries the possibility of farewell, and where memories linger long after the city lights have faded. Rather than portraying tragedy itself, this fragrance captures the quiet moments between hope and acceptance.

As Tears Go By explores the delicate balance between loyalty, tenderness, and inevitability. It is ultimately a tribute to Chinese aromatic culture through the lens of that cinema: patience, craftsmanship, and memory, held in a bottle. Like the film itself, its beauty is found in the emotions that remain long after the final scene.

The tea house

The composition opens with bergamot, green mandarin, yuzu, and pink pepper before unfolding into a Yunnan Sacred Tea Accord. Rich, aromatic, and gently bittersweet, the tea becomes the soul of the fragrance, recalling the atmosphere of traditional Chinese tea houses where conversation slows and every cup invites reflection. Rose de Mai, jasmine sambac, magnolia, and violet leaf bring a graceful floral nuance that supports the tea without ever taking its place.

Two agarwoods in conversation

At the heart is Chinese Plantation Kynam. The legendary wild kynam has become exceptionally rare, now beyond the reach of almost everyone. This fragrance instead celebrates a new generation of plantation grown Chinese kynam: cultivated over many years, genuine agarwood with a more refined and contemporary character. Its resinous warmth, delicate medicinal facets, and elegant woody depth show how Chinese agarwood craftsmanship continues to evolve without losing its authenticity.

The kynam is paired with Ver Animi Hainan Oud, creating a conversation between two distinct expressions of Chinese agarwood: one cultivated, one storied, both speaking in low voices across the same table. Frankincense introduces a gentle mineral brightness between them.

After the final scene

Cypress, cedarwood, and creamy Kupang sandalwood guide the fragrance into a smooth and lasting finish. A soft musk rests close to the skin, allowing the tea and precious woods to linger with quiet elegance, the way the film's ending stays in the room after the screen goes dark. This is not rarity worn as a trophy. It is patience, worn as a memory.

From the bench

The engineering here is a matter of seating arrangements. The tea accord must hold the centre of the table, so the citrus is dosed to leave early and the florals are kept in service roles. The two agarwoods are placed deliberately apart in the structure, kynam higher and brighter, Hainan oud lower and darker, so they converse rather than merge. Frankincense sits between them as the interpreter, and the Kupang sandalwood pours the last cup.

“Its beauty is found in the emotions that remain long after the final scene.”

The wearer

She pours the last cup without asking if he wants it. Outside, the neon hums; inside, the tea cools slower than the conversation. Neither of them says the word goodbye, and so, in a way, neither of them ever leaves.
