Amor Hosanna

Violet and scarlet. Lotus becomes rose, rose becomes orris, orris becomes skin, and two ouds hold the floor so none of it turns polite.

Most floral perfumes are built to stay flowers. They open bright, they hold their shape, and they end more or less where they began, a little softer. Amor Hosanna was built to move. It starts as water and petals and finishes as warm skin and dark wood, and the whole point of it is the distance travelled.

The house had been circling a question for a while: what does it sound like when longing turns into devotion. Not the moment of wanting, which perfumery has covered exhaustively, but the moment after, when wanting stops being about you and becomes something you offer. Amor Hosanna is the attempt at that transition, written in flowers that refuse to stay flowers.

The opening is water, not sugar

Bergamot puts the first light on the composition and violet leaf absolute cools it immediately, bringing crushed stems, sap and the smell of a cut garden. Two lotuses follow and they do not agree with each other either. Pink lotus is humid and faintly honeyed. Blue lotus is cooler, shadowed, narcotic in the way still water is narcotic. Between them, jambu oleoresin arrives with tart scarlet fruit and gives the cool opening a colour it would not otherwise have.

Nothing here is sweetened. The brightness is wet rather than sugary, and it is already leaning toward the heart before you have finished the first minute.

Two roses, then three irises to hold them

The heart is a deliberate argument between Georgian rose otto, which is clear, spiced and vertical, and Rose de Mai absolute, which is honeyed, fruity and horizontal. One lifts, the other spreads. Left alone they would cancel each other into a generic rose.

They are not left alone. Underneath sit three expressions of orris: orris butter for its powder and cream, Iris germanica resinoid for root, earth and balsam, and orris absolute to carry the violet of the opening all the way through the middle. Orris is what gives the roses their architecture. It is also the material that starts turning the flowers into something bodily. Orange blossom and plumeria widen the bouquet outward, one radiant, one creamy and tropical, and by the end of the heart the perfume no longer smells like a garden. It smells like a person who has been standing in one.

The descent, and the two ouds that make it possible

The base is where the title earns itself. Himalayan deer musk tincture does not sit under the flowers, it moves through them, turning petal and powder into the sensation of warm skin. Labdanum wraps that in amber and leather, oakmoss brings damp shadow, and Mysore sandalwood holds the whole seam together without flattening anything.

Then the two ouds. Sumbawa Purple Oud continues the violet and scarlet theme downward through dark fruit and aged resin, so the colour survives the drop. Hindi Oud CO² refuses to be pretty at all: earthy, leathery, animal. It is there precisely to stop the composition from becoming a beautiful thing about beauty. Without it, a perfume this floral and this expensive would end up polished. With it, the flowers have somewhere serious to land.

The chord
Cold water over cut stems,
two roses arguing politely,
iris turning petal into skin,
oud underneath, refusing to be pretty.
The composition, top to base
Bergamot · Violet Leaf Absolute · Pink Lotus Absolute · Blue Lotus Absolute · Jambu Oleoresin
Wet rather than sweet. Citrus light, then the green cold of crushed leaf, then two lotuses pulling in opposite directions, humid against shadowed. Jambu puts the first scarlet into an otherwise blue and green opening.
Georgian Rose Otto · Rose de Mai Absolute · Orris Butter · Iris Germanica Resinoid · Orris Absolute · Orange Blossom Absolute · Plumeria Absolute
Two roses with opposite personalities, one clear and spiced, one honeyed and dense, given a spine by three different irises. Orange blossom opens the bouquet outward and plumeria warms it. This is where the flowers stop being a garden and start being a body.
Himalayan Deer Musk Tincture · Labdanum Absolute · Oakmoss Absolute · Mysore Sandalwood · Sumbawa Purple Oud · Hindi Oud CO²
Musk moves through the flowers rather than sitting beneath them. Labdanum and oakmoss give amber, leather and damp shade, sandalwood holds the seam, and the two ouds decide how far down the perfume is allowed to go. Purple oud keeps the colour. Hindi oud takes the manners away.
The materials
Tap a note to read its role.
Violet Leaf Absolute
Not the flower, the leaf. Green, cold and slightly metallic, it smells of sap and cut stem rather than perfume. Its job is to keep the opening honest: it stops the citrus and the lotus from reading as sweetness and plants the violet idea that the orris and the purple oud will pick up later.
Blue Lotus Absolute
The stiller of the two lotuses. Aquatic, faintly narcotic, more shadow than light. Where pink lotus is honeyed and warm, blue lotus cools the room and gives the opening a depth that has nothing to do with heaviness.
Georgian Rose Otto
Distilled rather than extracted, so it keeps the transparency of the living flower. Fresh, finely spiced and vertical. It is the lift in the heart, and the reason the rose accord reads as petals and morning air rather than as jam.
Rose de Mai Absolute
The opposite temperament. Honeyed, fruity, voluptuous and dense. It supplies the scarlet richness that the Georgian rose deliberately withholds, and it is what makes the heart feel physically warm rather than merely beautiful.
Orris Butter
Years of rhizome drying reduced to a wax that smells of powder, violet and soft wood. It is the most expensive material in the formula per gram and the least demonstrative. Its work is structural: it gives the roses shape, texture and patience, and it begins the turn from flower toward skin.
Himalayan Deer Musk Tincture
A real animalic tincture, aged and used in small quantity. It does not appear as a note so much as a change in temperature. Petals, powder and fruit stop smelling like materials and start smelling like they are being worn.
Mysore Sandalwood
The bridge. Creamy, softly spiced, naturally radiant, and old enough to be genuinely rare. It sits between the floral heart and the animalic base and lets both keep their character instead of blending them into a compromise.
Sumbawa Purple Oud
An Indonesian oud with dark fruit and resinous sweetness rather than barnyard. It carries the violet and scarlet of the opening all the way into the base, so the perfume darkens without losing its colour. Hindi oud, its counterpart, supplies the animal weight it declines to.

From the bench

The difficulty was never the flowers. It was the landing. Early trials kept the floral heart and gave it a clean woody base, and the result was accomplished and completely uninteresting: a beautiful thing being beautiful for an hour. The perfume only became itself when the Hindi oud went in at a level that made the first several trials smell slightly wrong.

That is the trade this edition keeps making. A material that is difficult on its own is usually the one holding the composition up.

“We were not trying to make a rose that lasts. We were trying to make a rose that becomes something else and admits it.”

The hour
WhenEvening, and unhurried. It is not a daytime floral and it is not a signature you put on without noticing. Wear it when you have somewhere to be that matters to you.
DoseOne spray, then wait twenty minutes before deciding anything. The naturals are at a concentration where the first impression and the fifth are different perfumes.
SeasonCool evenings and the humid hours after rain. Heat pushes the musk and the ouds forward faster than the roses would like.
SkinIt reads warmer on skin than on paper, and much warmer on skin than most people expect from a floral. Test it on the wrist, not the card.
The world it lives in
Days of Heaven
Terrence Malick · 1978
Shot almost entirely in the last light of the day, so every frame is beautiful and every frame is about to end. Desire, wheat, water and consequence, photographed as if it were devotional. That is the register the perfume is written in.
Velvet against undyed linen
Deep scarlet, violet, and nothing shiny
One saturated colour worn with materials that have no gloss at all. The richness sits in the pile and the pigment rather than in a surface. Anything reflective would turn the whole thing into costume.
Devotional jazz, late
Modal, unhurried, played as an offering
Music where a single figure returns and deepens instead of resolving. It is not background, and it is not a performance for anyone in particular. It is what the perfume does with a rose.
A courtyard after rain
Frangipani on wet stone, at dusk
Somewhere between a garden and a threshold, where flowers, water and warm skin are all in the air at once and it is impossible to say which one you are smelling.

The wearer

They are not wearing this to be found attractive, which is the first thing you notice about them. They are wearing it the way somebody carries a private conviction into a room full of people who did not ask.

They will happily tell you what is in it, at length, and none of that is the point either. The point is that at some hour of the evening the flowers give way and what is left smells like a person who has decided something.
