Dante
Purgatorio
Smoke, ancestral leather and animalic oud, composed around the difficult passage between remorse and renewal.
Dante Purgatorio imagines a soul beginning its ascent while still carrying the weight of everything it has lived.
Fossilized amber, birch tar and myrrh establish a scorched, resinous atmosphere; leather, tobacco and animalic materials give that atmosphere a human presence. Beneath them, two expressions of oud meet sandalwood and white ambergris accord, allowing warmth and space to emerge gradually through the density.
The name draws upon the mountain of purification in Dante’s Purgatorio, where transformation requires movement, patience and the willingness to confront oneself. The ascent gives this composition its emotional direction. Smoke clings to the traveller’s clothing. Leather has absorbed years of weather and touch. Each step carries the past upward, until its weight begins to feel different.
“The past remains discernible throughout the ascent. By the end, it can be carried.”From the house’s notes on Dante Purgatorio
An old sanctuary
Weathered timber, extinguished embers and cool air entering through an open door. The opening is already deep.
Nothing disappears on the way up. The materials lean; they do not take turns. How it wears depends on skin and air.
Scorched, and already deep
Fossilized amber oil introduces a dark, mineral impression, threaded with the charred leather edge of birch tar. Calamus brings an aromatic, rootlike tension, while mushroom absolute suggests damp earth beneath stone.
Whiskey lactone lends an oak-inflected warmth around Chinese cedarwood, and myrrh draws a bitter resinous line through the composition. Together, these notes evoke the threshold of an old sanctuary: weathered timber, extinguished embers and cool air entering through an open door.
Leather that has travelled
Vintage Cuir de Russie natural accord becomes the central texture. Its smoked leather character gathers the opening into something worn, supple and bodily. Tobacco absolute adds dry leaf and a subdued sweetness, while hyraceum absolute deepens the leather with earthy animalic shadows.
Laotian oud moves through these materials with a dark woody presence, and Siberian deer musk skin tincture draws the composition closer to the warmth of the wearer.
Here, the fragrance becomes intimate in an unsettling way. There is the suggestion of a coat removed after a long journey, its lining holding warmth after the room has cooled. The leather carries both ceremony and exhaustion. Tobacco settles into its folds. The animalic heart gives the smoke a body to inhabit, making the composition feel inhabited rather than merely atmospheric.
Where the stairway opens
Labdanum resinoid gathers the rougher edges into a dense, balsamic warmth. Civet absolute and castoreum hyperessence extend the bodily character, bringing fur, hide and a darker continuity to the leather. Bengkulu incense grade oud gives the base its meditative gravity, carrying the impression of fragrant wood slowly surrendering to heat.
Kupang sandalwood introduces a smoother grain beneath it, while white ambergris accord lends a pale, saline impression of air around the resin and smoke.
The change is gradual. Sandalwood becomes more perceptible beneath the charred opening; the ambergris accord creates breathing room around the animalic depth. Traces of tar, earth and leather remain, but their relationship softens. What first felt enclosed begins to open, like a narrow stairway reaching a window high above the ground.
“Its beauty lies in the friction between scorched surfaces and living skin, between the gravity of resin and the possibility of air.”From the house’s notes
Eight to know
Birch Tar
Made by heating birch bark until it gives up a dark, smoky oil. It is the smell traditionally used to finish Russian leather.
Fossilized Amber Oil
Distilled from fossil amber, the resin of ancient trees. Dark, dry and mineral, closer to smoke and earth than to sweetness.
Calamus
The root of sweet flag, a marsh plant. Aromatic and slightly bitter, it gives the opening its rootlike tension.
Cuir de Russie
Russian leather: hide tanned with birch tar. Here a vintage natural accord, smoked, supple and worn.
Hyraceum
The fossilised, stone-like remains left by the rock hyrax over centuries. Earthy and animalic, gathered without harm to the animal.
Laotian Oud
Agarwood from Laos: dark, woody and resinous. It moves through the leather rather than sitting on top of it.
Bengkulu Oud
Incense-grade oud from Bengkulu, Sumatra. The base’s gravity: wood slowly surrendering to heat.
White Ambergris
An accord built around the pale, saline character of aged ambergris. It gives the resin and smoke room to breathe.
The full score

Black, silver, and four open eyes
The Artisan Edition label is black with silver lettering. At its centre, a circle holds a cross and four open eyes, drawn in a single white line.
There is no colour on it. Everything the label leaves out, the liquid supplies: tar, leather, resin, and the warmth of skin underneath.
Is it animalic?
Yes, deliberately. Hyraceum, Siberian deer musk skin tincture, civet and castoreum give the smoke and leather a body. They sit inside the composition rather than on top of it, and they soften as sandalwood and the ambergris accord open the base.
Is it a smoky perfume?
It opens scorched and resinous, with birch tar, fossilized amber oil and myrrh. Smoke is the atmosphere, not the whole story: leather, oud and skin carry it upward.
What does Beyond Layer mean here?
Dante Purgatorio is made in one batch and not made again. When this batch is gone, the object is enshrined in the Vault and the formula is retired.
Does parfum mean it lasts longer?
Not by itself. How a perfume wears depends on its materials, your skin and the air around you, not only on concentration.
How should I keep it?
Away from heat and direct sunlight, cap closed. A composition built on naturals keeps developing as it macerates, in the bottle and on the skin.
A short glossary
A concentrated aromatic extract obtained with solvents, closer to the raw material than a distilled oil.
A material macerated slowly in alcohol, sometimes for years, until it gives up its scent.
An extract from a resin such as labdanum; dense, balsamic and slow.
A highly concentrated form of a material, here castoreum.
Several materials built to read as one impression, as with Cuir de Russie or white ambergris.
