Time Runs Faster Upstairs
A gentle lesson in spacetime, taught through your phone and your feet.
Here is a fact you can use at dinner: your head is aging faster than your feet. Not poetically. Measurably. Clocks run quicker the further they sit from the center of the Earth, and physicists with atomic clocks have caught the difference across a single flight of stairs, about a third of a meter of height. The effect is absurdly small, a few hundred quadrillionths of a second over a lifetime of standing up, but it is real, it has been measured, and it means every tall person you know is a very slightly accelerated time traveler.
The lesson behind the party trick took two papers and one Einstein. The first, in 1905, showed that time is not a universal drumbeat: the faster you move, the slower your clock ticks compared to someone standing still. This is not an illusion of perception. Unstable particles created by cosmic rays high in the atmosphere should decay long before reaching the ground; they arrive anyway, because at their speed, their internal clocks genuinely run slow. Motion stretches time the way a vowel stretches in a slow song.
The second paper, a decade later, was stranger: gravity is not a force pulling things down but the shape of spacetime itself, curved by mass the way a mattress curves under a sleeper. And where spacetime curves, time literally passes at different rates. Deep in a gravity well, clocks crawl. Higher up, where the well is shallower, they hurry. Hence the stairs. Hence, taken to the extreme, the movie physics of black holes, which are not exaggerating much.

Now the part you can hold, because the Curriculum promised. The GPS satellites your phone consults are both far from Earth’s gravity, which makes their clocks run fast, and moving quickly, which makes them run slow. The two effects do not cancel: the satellites gain tens of microseconds a day on your wristwatch, and engineers must correct for it constantly, or every map on Earth would drift by kilometers within a day. You have never felt relativity, but you have followed its corrections to a restaurant. Einstein rides along on every trip you did not get lost on.
And space, for its part, is just time you can look at. Light takes time to travel, so every glance upward is a glance backward: the Moon as it was over a second ago, the Sun eight minutes stale, the stars years to millennia out of date, some of them possibly gone, their light still faithfully arriving like letters from a closed post office. The night sky is not a view. It is an archive.
Which is, of course, why this house cannot leave the subject alone. Perfume is the nose’s relativity: a scent caught in a stairwell can drop you twenty years down your own timeline in under a second, no spacecraft required. Physics says time flows at different rates depending on where you stand. Memory has always known it. Stand in the right place, wearing the right thing, and the lesson demonstrates itself.
