Pheromones
The most seductive promise in perfumery, and the one molecule science has never been able to find.
You have seen the promise. A small dark bottle by the airport till, a banner ad, the back page of a men's magazine: wear this and they will not be able to help themselves. The word doing all the work is always the same one. Pheromones. It sounds like science because it is science, just not the science the bottle is selling. After more than sixty years of looking, no one has ever shown that a single human pheromone exists. The most confident claim in all of perfumery rests on a molecule nobody has found.
A signal, not a perfume.
In 1959 two researchers, Peter Karlson and Martin Lüscher, needed a name for a new kind of chemical: not a hormone, which travels inside one body, but a molecule released by one animal that changes the behaviour of another of the same species. They built it from Greek, pherein, to carry, and horman, to excite. A pheromone is a message sent on the air, and the reply is more or less automatic.
The same year, Adolf Butenandt finished a labour of his own. To isolate the sex attractant of the silk moth he had worked through the scent glands of half a million females. The molecule he found, bombykol, is almost unbelievably potent: a male silk moth, downwind, will turn and beat upwind on the strength of a few molecules landing on his feathered antennae. That is what a real pheromone looks like. One compound, one species, one hardwired response.
Real pheromones, and what they do.
They are everywhere in the animal world, and they are specific, and they repeat. Three clean examples, each proven down to the molecule.
A single compound. A male will fly upwind toward a few stray molecules of it across an open field. The pheromone every other is measured against.
Spray a sow in heat with this steroid from boar saliva and she braces into the mating stance on reflex. Farmers buy it in an aerosol. Remember this molecule.
One compound in a doe's milk makes any newborn rabbit, not only her own, search and latch within seconds. Identified, synthesised, reproduced.
Each is a true pheromone: one substance, an innate response shared by the whole species, repeatable in a lab. Hold that standard in mind. It is the standard the human versions have never once met.
The second nose humans don't have.
In most mammals pheromones are read not by the ordinary nose but by a separate one: the vomeronasal organ, a small paired tube at the base of the nasal septum, wired to its own dedicated patch of brain. A mouse, a dog, a horse runs this second system constantly. We were told we had it too.
We do, and we don't. Most adults have a small pit where the organ should be, but it is a ruin. It has no working sensory neurons running to the brain. The region that ought to receive its signals, the accessory olfactory bulb, is simply absent in adult humans. And the genes are the plainest tell of all: of the receptors that would read a pheromone, nearly every one is a broken pseudogene, and the single ion channel the whole system depends on, TRPC2, is itself a pseudogene in humans and the other apes. The wiring a pheromone would travel down is, in us, mostly rubble.
Everything you have heard, and how it broke.
The most quoted study is the dormitory one. In 1971 Martha McClintock reported in Nature that women living together drifted into menstrual sync, and an unseen chemical signal took the credit. It became common knowledge. It also, under careful re-analysis, fell apart: once statisticians modelled cycles that naturally drift and overlap by chance, the famous synchrony was indistinguishable from coincidence. The effect almost everyone is sure is real is, most likely, an artefact of arithmetic.
The other pillar is two molecules: androstadienone, from male sweat, and estratetraenol, related to oestrogen. Close to sixty studies reported that sniffing them shifts mood, attraction, even how you read a face. It looked like a real literature. Then in 2017 a team ran the clean, properly blinded version everyone had skipped, and found nothing: no effect on attractiveness, on gender perception, on judgement. An echo chamber of positive results, and at the centre of it, silence.
Because something real is hiding underneath.
The myth survives because the experience is genuine. Some people really do smell right to us. The reason is not a pheromone; it is ordinary smell, doing two quieter things.
The first is immunity. In a much-loved Swiss experiment in 1995, women smelled t-shirts slept in by different men and tended to prefer the scent of those whose immune-system genes were least like their own, the pattern that, in theory, makes for hardier children. It is a real and lovely finding, argued over ever since, but notice what it is: a preference, learned and read through the ordinary nose, not a switch thrown by a signal.
The second is the one place a human pheromone may genuinely be waiting. The small glands around a nursing mother's areola give off a secretion that will make almost any newborn, not only her own, turn and root and suckle. It is reliable, it is unlearned, and it behaves exactly like the proven rabbit pheromone. The molecule has not been pinned down yet. If we ever do find a human pheromone, the biologist Tristram Wyatt argues, it will most likely be this: the smell of nourishment, not the smell of sex.
You are paying for confidence.
So what does a "pheromone perfume" actually contain? Usually androstenone or its cousin androstenol, sometimes a musk, in an ordinary fragrance base. To the third of people who cannot smell androstenone, it is unscented. To everyone else it reads as faintly animal, warm, now and then unpleasant. What it does not do is broadcast an override into another person's brain. The genuine, working pheromone industry is in fact enormous, and almost all of it is agriculture: traps in orchards baited with insect sex-attractants, moths lured into confusion. The part with the least evidence behind it is the part sprayed on a collarbone.
And yet wearers are not entirely wrong to feel something. Believe you are irresistible and you stand differently, hold a gaze a beat longer, move with the ease that genuinely draws people in. The molecule is inert. The confidence is not. That is a real effect, and it is the oldest one in perfumery.
We don't sell a signal. We sell a memory.
This house has never believed a fragrance is a weapon you deploy on someone. It is a thing that attaches itself to you in another person's memory, until the smell and the thought of you become the same thing. That is slower than any pheromone and far stronger, because it cannot be bottled and sold to a stranger. It has to be worn, repeated, lived in. The only love spell that has ever worked is becoming someone's memory.
