The Morning Walk Has No Destination

Jalan-jalan. To go for the sake of going. The walk that arrives nowhere is the only kind that gets you somewhere.

Jakarta · July 2026

Indonesian has a lovely construction for it: jalan-jalan. The word for road, said twice, meaning to wander, to go about, to walk with no particular errand. Not the commute, which has a destination and a clock. Not the errand, which has a list. Jalan-jalan is walking as its own reason, and the morning is its best hour.

Something happens to a body let loose in the first light without a target. The mind, denied a task, begins to notice. The smell of the night's rain lifting off warm pavement. Bread, somewhere. A neighbour's kettle. The particular blue the sky holds for twenty minutes before the heat arrives and flattens everything. None of this reaches you when you are going somewhere. Purpose is a kind of blindfold.

Purpose is a kind of blindfold. The walk that arrives nowhere is the only kind that lets you see.

The destinationless walk is quietly subversive in an age that measures everything. There are no steps to hit, no route to optimise, no personal best. You cannot win a jalan-jalan. That is precisely its medicine. It is one of the last activities left that resists being turned into a metric, and it heals something the metrics have worn thin.

The body knows things the schedule does not. Walk without aim for half an hour and problems that felt locked begin, unbidden, to loosen. This is not mysticism, it is circulation and rhythm and the particular associative freedom of a mind that has been given nothing to hold. Writers have always known this. Composers too. The idea arrives on the walk, never at the desk.

Do it before the phone. That is the whole discipline. The morning walk with a screen in your hand is not a walk, it is scrolling with extra steps. Leave it at home, or in your pocket and forgotten. The point is to be somewhere with your whole attention, which is the rarest way to be anywhere now.

You cannot win a jalan-jalan. That is precisely its medicine.

There is a social version too, the evening one, when whole neighbourhoods pour out to walk nowhere together, greeting, pausing, letting the day cool. But the morning walk is solitary and it is yours. It asks for nothing and gives back the one thing the day is about to take: a stretch of time that belongs to no one's plan, not even your own.

Tomorrow, go out before you have decided where. Turn whichever way looks better. Let the walk arrive nowhere. You will come back having been somewhere the itinerary could never have taken you.
