Why So Serious?

Avant garde here needs a little explanation.

There is nothing objectively radical about many of the choices inside Why So Serious? Another perfume house might look at its modern woody materials, transparent florals, musks and strict attention to IFRA standards and find nothing particularly rebellious about them. Some might even consider them ordinary.

But avant garde has always depended, at least partly, on where one is standing.

For HoM Haute, this fragrance breaks several of the house’s own unwritten rules. The house has often been drawn toward difficult materials, unusual proportions, old structures, naturals, imperfections and compositions that do not necessarily begin with the question of broad familiarity. Why So Serious? deliberately walks in another direction.

Its starting point is something undeniably familiar and unapologetically popular: the expansive woody amber language that has become one of the signatures of contemporary perfumery. Iso E Super and Ambrox form an enormous part of its architecture. Around them are transparent florals, clean musks and modern sandalwood materials. The formula is also deliberately screened against current IFRA standards.

None of those decisions would necessarily be considered avant garde elsewhere.

Here, they are.

That contradiction became more interesting than trying to make something strange simply for the sake of being strange.

The question gradually moved beyond perfume. If the same object can appear conventional from one position and rebellious from another, perhaps our understanding of things has as much to do with where we stand as with the thing itself.

So Why So Serious? became an exercise in perspective.

The familiar structure is allowed to remain recognizable, but it is slowly disturbed. Violet and iris-like tones enter the clean woody space. Lotus brings a watery, almost suspended floral quality. Pepper gives it friction. Incense introduces shadow. Basil and thyme appear where something smoother might have been expected. Vetiver, patchouli, labdanum, oakmoss and a trace of Sumatra agarwood pull a very modern structure toward something older, darker and less immediately defined.

Nothing is there to destroy what came before it. The point is not to take something popular and prove that it needs to be corrected. Nor is the familiar structure presented as superior because it is easier to understand.

Both can exist at once.

That is also why the fragrance belongs to Heart of Movement.

Movement does not always mean abandoning one position for another. Sometimes it is simply the willingness to move around an idea before deciding what it is. From one side, something can look excessive; from another, restrained. What feels experimental within one tradition can be completely ordinary within another. What one person considers beautiful may leave another untouched. Neither observation automatically cancels the other.

Perfumery makes this unusually easy to forget because taste is often discussed as though it were a verdict. Classical against modern. Natural against synthetic. Difficult against commercial. Artistic against popular. Compliant against unrestricted. Eventually these categories begin to sound less like descriptions and more like opposing sides that require a winner.

Why So Serious? has little interest in choosing one.

Instead, it borrows freely from those supposed opposites. Its large modern materials are not treated with embarrassment. Its stranger details are not presented as proof of artistic seriousness. The familiar and unfamiliar are simply allowed to occupy the same room.

Perhaps that is the small provocation behind Avant Garde No. 2.

Not that this perfume is avant garde by some universal definition, but that such a universal definition may not exist in the first place.

For another house, this could be normal. For this house, it represents a departure. Change the observer, the history, the expectations or the point of reference, and the meaning changes with them.

The same is true far beyond fragrance.

We spend a great deal of time deciding that one interpretation must be correct before considering the position from which another person is looking. Sometimes there is no hidden stupidity or bad intention on either side. Two people can look at exactly the same thing, describe it differently, and both descriptions can make sense from where they stand.

That does not mean every question has no answer, or that right and wrong never exist. It simply leaves room for the possibility that perspective matters more often than we admit.

Move a little, and the object changes.

Or perhaps the object remains exactly where it was, and what changes is us.

That is the spirit of Why So Serious?: to worry a little less about defending categories, to remain suspicious of certainty when certainty is unnecessary, and to stay curious enough to walk around an idea before judging it.

Sometimes the most useful movement is only a few steps to the side.

The view can be completely different from there.
